Speaking Pods: Master American Culture and Communication through Film for Professional and Personal Success
Oct 5 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm PDT
OVERVIEW
American film reveals, in moving color and spoken sound, the native language playbook you need to become an agile speaker at work and in social settings.
In a group of three students with coach Joe, you will mimic, memorize, and enact iconic lines and scenes, making them your own, fine-tuning your grammar, and growing your vocabulary. By decoding cultural references, American values, emotions, and humor, you’ll become more relatable and impactful in both your professional and personal life.
Each week, we analyze a film, focusing on one or two scenes to break down the language. Students recite practicing vocal variety learning to communicate with the same emotional intent as the characters.
This technique builds muscle memory and confidence for you to draw upon when presenting a speech, telling a story, or thinking on your feet.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
The course structure is designed for maximum student participation and practical application through the use of film.
Weekly Film Analysis:
Each week, we focus on one or two scenes from a selected film, learn the language, and replicate vocal variety for expressivity to reproduce a character’s message. Then, together, we apply phrases to your workplace or social life, permanently adding them to your communication toolkit.
Performance Practice:
We “act out” scenes, which improves response quality, which is essential to giving articulate speeches, storytelling with impact, and impromptu speaking.
