Speaking Pods for Professional and Personal Success: Master American Culture and Native ways of Speaking through Film

Why Film?

It’s as close as you can get to native speech! You can control it, too. Just slow it down, use subtitles, and replay it until comfortable.  And American film reveals, in living color and spoken sound, the native language playbook you need to become a next-level speaker at work and in social settings. 

How will you learn?

You will be one of only three students in a Pod. Each week with Coach Joe you and your Podmates will analyze a film, “act out” scenes, and practice imitating the emotional expressivity of the various characters.

In Speaking Pods Joe carefully curated speech clips from classic films to illustrate key speaking techniques. Taking the “Speaking Pod” class with Dr. Rios has been an invaluable experience for improving my communication skills. Watching American movies, I gained deeper insights into Western culture, understanding how people think and communicate, including the use of idioms. The role plays, where we mimic movie characters, are especially helpful—they push me out of my comfort zone to speak and act like an American. These exercises teach me essential communication techniques such as body language, tone, and pitch. I also appreciate the honest and open feedback from Dr. Rios who creates a safe learning environment where we can improve without fear of being laughed at. This class is perfect for anyone looking to become more confident in their English communication skills.
